Andrew's story
James' Place
10/09/25
Andrew, aged 43 from North Shields, came to James’ Place Newcastle in September last year
“I was referred to James’ Place by a NHS mental health practitioner after I found myself in a mental health crisis with plans to end my life. There was so much happening in my life, I was having issues with my ex-girlfriend, work were cutting my hours and I was finding it hard to make ends meet, I was dealing with an undiagnosed neurodivergence, and I was binge drinking to cope. I had been on the waiting list for talking therapies for a while so I was amazed when James’ Place got me in to see a therapist within two days. My therapist helped me feel less overwhelmed and try to organise my thoughts and help me come up with strategies to deal with one issue at a time. With the support of my therapist I was able to get a diagnosis for my autism/ADHD, and she encouraged me to sign up to a photography course which has now led to me setting up my own business. James’ Place really helped me when I needed it most, my life has changed since I went to them for support.”
