Anthony's story
James' Place

54 year old Anthony came to our Liverpool centre for help last year.
“I came to James’ Place last year after informing my GP about a suicide attempt. Having retired from a global job, I returned to Liverpool, where excessive drinking and too much free time exacerbated my problems. The unresolved issues in my life, particularly the trauma from losing a friend at Hillsborough, had always been there but finally had caught up with me. I had always felt extremely guilty about that day, blaming myself for the loss of my friend’s life and consequently running from relationships, indulging in substance abuse, and getting into trouble. This self-destructive behaviour culminated in a serious systematic plan to end my life over a period of about six months. After a serious attempt on my life, I hit rock bottom. I eventually found the courage to confide in my sister, who urged me to seek help from my GP, leading to a referral to James’ Place.
At James’ Place, my therapist helped me confront the trauma of losing my friend, something I had avoided for years. By discussing and facing these issues, I was able to start my recovery. I ceased partying and drug use and began communicating more about my feelings. Moving to a rural area has significantly improved my mental health and removed triggers for both the guilt of that day and the crutch of my ‘partying’ lifestyle. I have managed to stop smoking, stop drugs and stopped drinking. I also reached out to individuals I had wronged over the years to offer apologies. Now, I live my life on my own terms and am learning to forgive myself. Without James’ Place and my family I am uncertain I would be here today. It feels like I have been given another chance at life.”
