Elmer's story
James' Place
06/01/26

Elmer came to James’ Place London in January last year after being referred by his local NHS crisis team.
“I was in a crisis for a combination of reasons including work stress, financial worries and worry about my parents who live abroad. There were a few different things going on and I started to feel scared for my own safety, that I was a risk to myself. I was open to anything at that point I just knew I needed help. I was surprised how quickly James’ Place saw me, I wasn’t expecting to be contacted so quickly but it was really reassuring. The atmosphere at the centre was really calm and welcoming, I felt really comfortable. My therapist really helped me tease out what I was feeling and why, we delved into some things that had happened in the past, and I started to make connections between some events and why I was in crisis now. It made a significant and big difference to my mood, my outlook, my perspective, my work and my life. With my therapist’s support, I also reached out for an ADHD diagnosis, as it became clear during my sessions that this might also be going on in the background of my crisis.
Thanks to James’ Place I feel able to go forward with some of the tools I learned and I have more confidence in managing difficult feelings and moments as they come up. My partner came to the second to last session and he also found it really helpful to learn how he can support me when I’m low and anxious.”
